Project Profile

Poway Unified School District | California Energy Conservation Program

Alpers Engineering combined efforts with a team of engineers and contractors to provide consulting services to develop an ECM strategy and implement these measures to save energy. Alpers Engineering provided energy audits, monitor based commissioning, energy calculations and project management for the HVAC and control related measures.

The ECM’s included retro-commissioning, energy efficient HVAC equipment changeout, energy management system upgrades, control system upgrades and optimization of existing control sequences.

Del Norte High School
Project Description: This 210,000 sq. ft. project was retro-commissioned by Alpers Engineering in 2017. The Poway Unified School District hired Alpers Engineering to provide consulting engineering services to Del Norte High School for the California State Proposition 39. The project referenced was retro commissioned as part of the energy conservation efforts for the District. Alpers studied the energy utilization for all the Districts 40 schools and picked the seven highest energy users. These schools were all retro-commissioned, and Del Norte was the most significant.

Performance on the project: The HVAC and Lighting systems engineering expertise of Alpers Engineering provide our commissioning team the ability to not only functionally test the system, but we can effectively troubleshoot typical issues. The kind of problems that prevent new construction and existing systems from performing efficiently. Our experience in retro-commissioning schools has shown energy reductions between 10 and 25%, and in some cases, even more.

Mesa Verde Middle School

Project Description: The ECMs at MVMS replaced the entire north and south chilled water and heating hot water systems. 2‐New chillers, and boilers, and associated pumps, air separators, buffer tanks, and expansion tanks were installed, tested, and verified. 64 new CHW and HHW fan coils were installed to serve the campus along with the 10 existing fan coils that were recently changed; all Hydronic ‐ 74 fan coils were given new control systems. Additionally, existing Packaged units AC‐1 thru 7, AH‐1 thru 12, and MAU‐1 were installed with new thermostats and controls.
